ELSEWHERE Ruth Nemec, 78, who created the radio show "Talk and Music" and penned the World War song "Little Navy Girl," died Wednesday in Palm Beach, Fla.

Maynard L. Pennell, 84, who helped design Boeing's 707 and 727 jetliners, died Tuesday in Seattle. After joining Boeing in 1940, Pennell worked on Boeing's B-29 bomber, then moved to the company's commercial aircraft side after World War II. When Boeing decided in 1952 to build the Dash 80 prototype for the 707, the country's first commercial jetliner, Pennell was named senior project engineer. He later became director of engingering for Boeing's commercial division, helping design the 707, the Air Force's KC-125 tanker-transport and the 727 jetliner.

He was president of Atlantic Bottling Co. and a member of the Executive Board of Directors of Branch Bank of Wilson, N.C., and Salvation Army Board of Director's of Kinston. He helped found Brody Brothers' Foundation and Brody Medical Foundation of East Carolina University Medical School and was a benefactor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University, Blumenthal Home, Lenoir Memorial Hospital, Temple Israel and Winston High School.
