The State from Columbia, South Carolina (2024)

B4 SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2004 THE STATE, COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA WWW.THESTATE.COM OBITUARIES JOHN RANDOLPH Stage, screen, TV actor LOS ANGELES John Randolph, a prolific, Tony-winning character actor who played Roseanne's father in "Roseanne" and Tom Hanks' grandfather in "You've Got Mail," has died. He was 88. Randolph died Tuesday at his home in Hollywood, his family said. Though his film career was hobbled in the 1950s because of the blacklist, he chalked up dozens of roles in later decades. He played a police chief in 1973's "Serpico," appeared in the 1974 TV movie "The Missiles of October," and was Roseanne's father in several episodes of "Roseanne." His grandfather role in the 1998 "You've Got Mail" was one of his last.

In 1987, Randolph won a Tony Award for his role as a grandfather in Neil Simon's play "Broadway Bound." He was in the original New York stage productions of "The Sound of Music," "Paint Your Wagon" and "The Visit," and appeared in local plays until four years ago. He was often stopped on the street by people who asked if they knew him, said his daughter-inlaw, Kate Randolph. "He'd say, I've been in your living room many times," she said. Born in New York City, Randolph described himself as an "old radical" and became politically active in the 1930s. He rallied for convicted spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and later marched with the Rev.

Martin Luther King Jr. He refused to answer questions when called before the House UnAmerican Activities Committee in 1955 and was blacklisted from Hollywood for years, during which time he performed in plays in and around New York. SUSIE BROWN Mother of James Brown AUGUSTA Susie Brown, the mother of singer James Brown, has died of heart failure. She was 87. Brown died at Augusta Hills Nursing Center on Thursday after an extended illness.

But even as her health failed in her final years, Brown loved to brag about the success of her only son. "When she was in the hospital, she would tell them in a minute who she was," said Brown's nephew, James Carter of Bamberg. "He was her heart, boy. And he loved her, too." Brown was born in Bamberg County in 1916 and attended schools there. At 16, she met James Joseph Brown Sr.

during a trip visiting family in Barnwell County, and the two were married in 1932. Son James 1 was born the following year. In the 1950s, Brown moved to New York City, where she worked as a seamstress in the city's garment district. As her son began his singing career, she became one of his most devoted fans, attending nearly every show he performed in New York. "Every time he was there, he would contact her," Carter said.

"She would hop in a cab and go. She got to know New York as good as anybody." Brown returned to Bamberg County in 1976 to be closer to family and her son. His success was a shining light in her life, Carter said. "She just loved it," he said. "She was so proud of him." In addition to her son, James, and her nephew, Carter, Brown is survived by a sister, Jettie Loadholt, and a brother, Earl Behling.
